About

The landscape of Pembrokeshire - its coast of cliffs, expansive skies, sheltered inlets and its often-untouched interior lands and old buildings - is both subject and catalyst in my work. Drawing directly within it allows me to absorb its rhythms, structures and quiet sense of permanence. These drawings carry the physical and emotional memory of place back to the studio, where they become the foundations for transformation.

My paintings move between observation and abstraction. I try to distil the landscape’s energy - the weight of rock against sky, the pull of tide, the vagaries of the weather or the tension between containment and openness of an ancient farmyard. Forms are simplified and restructured; colour is heightened and allowed to assert its own presence. The landscape becomes less a depiction and more a constructed terrain shaped by balance, disruption and response.

Working primarily in acrylic on gessoed board, I build textured surfaces through layered brushwork and sometimes also collage. Collage fragments - created from my own printmaking processes - are cut or torn and positioned instinctively, interrupting and reconfiguring space. Layers obscure and reveal, echoing the way landscape itself accumulates traces of time.

Separately to my paintings, I make handmade prints using Intaglio processes such as dry-point printing - where I etch my designs into printing plates. Also Relief Printing such as linocut or with collagraphs - where I build up surface textures on top of plates to recreate the landscape. Remnants of handmade prints are also often used as collage in my paintings.
